Ali's Kilimanjaro Trip

Story

After a lot of sweat, a few tears and the encouragement (i.e. pushing/dragging) from Asante, one of our guides – Hardnut (the bear) and I made it to the top of Kilimanjaro, without the aid of an oxygen tank or Diamox!! Although, I wasn’t ill with the effects of the altitude I found the summit night a real struggle and the lack of oxygen played its part. Making the final ascent in the dark at 11pm when I really wanted to be asleep was a killer and the ensuing 5hr hike to the summit (over 1000 metres) passed in a bit of a blur as I pretty much felt like I was sleepwalking in treacle. It was a huge relief to get to the top, arriving in time for the sun rising and a well earned flask of tea. Elation, however, turns to disbelief when the guide then tells you that it’s another 2hr hike to the proper summit! Not sure where I got my second wind from but the bear and I struggled on. There were 15 of us in the group - 14 made it to Gilman's Point (the first summit) and ten of us made it to Uhuru Peak. I think it’s fair to say I will remember my 40th birthday although I’m still not sure I can actually say I enjoyed it! A big thank you to everybody for the words of encouragement and, of course, your donations.
